The Gentle Giants: Myths, History & Temperament

Where Do They Come From?

The Maine Coon is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America, acting as the official state cat of Maine. Their origins are shrouded in fascinating myths:

  • The Raccoon Myth: A biological impossibility, but early folklore suggested they were a cross between semi-wild cats and raccoons—which explained their bushy ringed tails and the name "Coon."
  • The Royal Connection: Legend has it that before her execution, Marie Antoinette attempted to escape France with her favorite Turkish Angora cats aboard Captain Samuel Clough's ship.
  • The Viking Theory: The most scientifically probable theory is that they are descendants of Norwegian Forest Cats brought over by Leif Erikson and early Viking explorers.

Temperament: The "Dog" of the Cat World

Maine Coons are bred today primarily for their spectacular companionship. They are robust, majestic, and famously devoted to their humans.

  • Social Butterflies: They love to be involved in whatever you are doing. They will follow you from room to room, supervise your cooking, and "chirp" to talk to you.
  • Great with Kids & Dogs: Known for their infinite patience, they are the ultimate family pet. They typically adapt wonderfully to households with children and dogs.
  • Fascinated by Water: Don't be surprised if your RV Cattery kitten tries to join you in the shower, scoops water out of their bowl, or plays in the sink!
  • Slow Growers: A Maine Coon kitten will keep growing until they are 3 to 5 years old. They enjoy a long lifespan of 12 to 15 years.

A Kaleidoscope of Colors: The RV Genetics

The Maine Coon standard accepts an astonishing variety of colors and patterns—from solid blacks, blues, and pristine whites, to vibrant reds (oranges), striking silvers, and complex tortoiseshells.

Our Current Litters: The White & Brown Tabby Magic

At RV Cattery, we currently boast a foundation of gorgeous White and Brown Tabby Maine Coons. Breeding these two together is incredibly exciting due to how feline genetics work.

The Secret of the White Coat: In cats, a solid White coat is actually caused by a dominant "masking" gene (the W gene). It acts like a snowy white blanket thrown over the cat's true genetic color! This means our White cat is secretly carrying the code for other colors underneath.

Cat genetics and colors

What colors can persist from this pairing?

Because the White parent masks their true color, and the Brown Tabby carries the wild-type agouti gene, the resulting kittens can be a true rainbow:

  • Solid White: Statistically, about 50% of the kittens will inherit the dominant white "coat" and look just like their white parent.
  • Classic or Mackerel Brown Tabbies: Inheriting the beautiful, earthy stripes and swirls of the tabby parent.
  • Surprise Colors: If the White parent is hiding a recessive "dilute" gene or a solid color gene, you might suddenly see Solid Blacks, Blue Tabbies, or striking Bicolors. Every litter is a genetic lottery!

Caring for a Maine Coon

Bringing a Maine Coon into your home requires a bit of preparation. Because of their sheer size and thick coats, their needs differ slightly from a standard domestic cat.

  • Dietary Needs: As massive, active cats, they require a premium, high-protein diet. Cheaper foods filled with grains won't support their bone growth and muscle mass.
  • Grooming: Despite their shaggy, feral appearance, their fur is surprisingly silky and doesn't mat as easily as a Persian's. However, they still require brushing at least twice a week.
  • Heavy-Duty Furniture: Standard cat trees will topple under the weight of a leaping adult Maine Coon. You will need to invest in sturdy, wide-based scratching posts and extra-large litter boxes.

The RV Cattery Lifestyle in Meyerton

Our kittens don't just live here; they rule the house. We vehemently oppose the use of small, restrictive cages. At RV Cattery, our felines enjoy a large, custom-built cattery complete with dedicated indoor/outdoor playrooms tailored specifically for their physical and mental enrichment.

From the moment they open their eyes, they are surrounded by climbing towers, scratching posts, interactive puzzle toys, and endless human affection. Because they are raised directly underfoot in our home environment, our kittens are desensitized to household noises (vacuums, TVs, chatter) and are incredibly well-socialized. This ensures that by the time your kitten comes home to you, they are confident, well-adjusted, and ready to immediately bond with your family.
